Great light is what creates great images.
What makes a photograph is not the camera sensor, or the autofocus system, or the depth of field. Photographs are made with light.

Here’s the before/after shot I promised yesterday which showcases the not-too-shabby dynamic range and noise control of the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. But I don’t want to talk about it any longer. Instead, I’d like to say this.

I’m like a lot of photographers. I want to shoot more often. And one big reason I don’t shoot as much as I like is that I waste too much time reading about gear.

Google announced its new in-house Pixel smartphone this week, boasting that it has “the best smartphone camera ever.” DxOMark agreed, giving the phone’s camera a record-breaking score of 89. The folks at crowdsourced camera gear statistics website Explorecams have released a new infographic that reveals the most commonly used camera and lens combinations used to capture over 11.5 million photos they’ve analyzed online.

Many years ago when I was a starry-eyed undergrad I would ask every photographer I came across the same question:

I was extremely lucky to have many talented and generous photographers take me under their wing to show me the ropes. Without their valuable advice there is no way I would have become the photographer I am today. 


Ironically, the number one question I now get asked as an Open producer is “How do I take better photos?” 


So along with some tips that I’ve picked up over the years, I’ve recruited some outstanding snappers across Australia to share their own secret techniques about how they take their photos to the next level.
